CITY NEWS Two burnt to death as Herders, farmers clash victims get relief materials at Ledi village bus catches fire in Abaji

Two persons were burnt to death after a bus went up in flames on Thursday night at Abaji, on AbujaLokoj­a road.

A witness said the incident happened at about 9:00pm when a Toyota Hiace bus with registrati­on number XD 124YAB loaded with tomato lost control and crashed into a concrete drainage.

He said the bus went up in flames, burning the driver and a passenger who were trapped in it.

The witness said one passenger was rescued but sustained burns and was immediatel­y taken to hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the area.

When contacted, the Abaji unit commander of the FRSC, ACC Olasupo Esuruoso, confirmed the incident, which he attributed to speed limit violation and loss of control.

He said the two corpses were taken away for burial by relatives who came from Zaria, Kaduna State, while the injured passenger was taken to Abaji General Hospital.

When our reporter visited the hospital, a staff said the injured was referred to University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.

The commander added that a middle aged man, identified as Mohammed was also crushed on the same day in the morning by a motorist.

He said the incident happened at about 10:00am when a Kia Cerato car with registrati­on number LKJ 240 MX coming from Lokoja axis crushed the man who was crossing the road.

He said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at Abaji General Hospital morgue. The FCT National Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has donated relief materials to victims of herders/farmers clash at Ledi village of Gwagwalada Area Council.

Among the items donated to the victims were bags of rice, maize, millet, vegetable oil, palm oil, beans, bundles of zinc, bags of cement, clothes, cooking utensils, veterinary drugs among others.

The director general of FCT NEMA, Alhaji Garba Abbas Idris, stressed the need for farmers and herders to always live in peace.

He said the recent clash which led to destructio­n of property and loss of lives was unfortunat­e.

Also speaking, the chairman of the council, Alhaji Adamu Mustapha, said the highest thing a leader requires is peaceful coexistenc­e among his people.

He said such peaceful coexistenc­e would lead to developmen­t, stressing that a situation where there was breach of peace, all other issues would be paralyzed.

The chairman thanked FCT NEMA and the FCT minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, for ensuring that peace reigned in the council.

He assured the management of the agency that he would ensure the items donated were judiciousl­y utilized.
