One dies as train hits 2 in Ilorin

- From Romoke W. Ahmad, Ilorin

Two passengers were recently hit by a train in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

One of them was said to have died on the spot because of the degrees of injury he sustained from the scene of the incident.

It was gathered that the victims were scrambling to join the train which was taking off from the station.

Sources at the scene of the incident said the victims had alighted from the train after it berthed at the station and went to observe prayers a few metres away.

They, however, saw it slowly taking off and rushed to catch up with it when their legs slipped on the rail track, consequent upon which they were crushed.

While the first victim reportedly had a part of his face ripped off, which allegedly resulted in his death, the other was said to have had one of his legs broken on the spot.

They were reportedly rushed into a hospital for quick medical attention. Some eye witnesses at the scene blamed the driver of the train for the incident, alleging it was due to over-speeding on his part.

A passer-by, who took part in the rescue of the victim, attributed the ugly incident to the indiscretion of the driver, who he said at a time stopped and later took off without informing some passengers who had alighted from the train to do one or two things.
