Kaduna govt, police warn NLC to keep off state There’s no stopping us now – Labour

- From Andrew Agbese & Faruk Umar, Kaduna

The Kaduna State Government and the state police command have warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against carrying out its intended protest over the sacking of workers in the state.

The NLC had on Tuesday reiterated its notice to the Kaduna State Government that it would be leading a protest to defend the rights of workers sacked by the Kaduna State Government starting from today.

Senior special assistant to the Kaduna Governor of Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, told the press that the state government would take firm actions against any persons or group seeking to undermine peace.

He said, “The security agencies have already made it clear that nobody or group will be allowed to repeat those messy incidents or threaten law and order in Kaduna State in the guise of a march. Trade unions cannot hold our state to ransom by shamelessly insisting on the retention of bad teachers.”

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Agyole Abeh, had at an earlier press briefing asked the NLC to stay away from the state, saying a law of the state prohibits all forms of public protests.

He said, “We wish to remind that the last incident relating to the same issues of teachers where the organized labour union staged what was supposed to be a peaceful protest turned out to be a breach of the public.”

Meanwhile, the NLC said they have heard that thugs will be mobilised to disrupt the workers’ peaceful protest holding today.

“We wish to use this opportunity to let the Governor and his cohorts know that our members from across the country are fully mobilised in Kaduna, and nothing, absolutely nothing, will stop them from peacefully protesting against his mindless policies on Thursday, November 11, 2018.

“Today, it is about 36,000 Kaduna State workers thrown out of work for no just cause. Tomorrow, it could be anybody. We are committed to a peaceful protest. No stopping us now.”
