…Another orders PDP to maintain status quo on Kashamu

- By Clement A. Oloyede

An FCT High Court in Apo has ordered that status quo be maintained in a suit filed by Senator Buruji Kashamu (Ogun East) against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Kashamu had approached the court before the December 9, 2017, national convention of the party to seek the order of the court compelling PDP not to take disciplinary action against him.

However, few hours before the convention, the party’s then National Caretaker Committee announced a one month suspension of the lawmaker without stating any reason.

At the resumed hearing of the matter before Justice Valentice Ashi yesterday, Kashamu’s lawyer, Charles Ndukwe, informed the court about the action taken by the party.

He said the action of the party in suspending the lawmaker was contrary to the agreement of parties in the suit at the last adjourned date that no further step would be taken pending the hearing and determination of the case.

He prayed the court to set aside Kashamu’s suspension and order that the status quo be maintained in the matter.

However, counsel to the PDP was absent in court, thus there was no objection to the application.

Delivering ruling on the application, Justice Ashi held that the suspension was illegal and described the action of the party as contemptuous, adding that the status quo be maintained by parties in the matter pending its determination.
