Court orders arrest of driver who jumped bail

-

An Upper Area Court sitting in Masaka, Nasarawa State, yesterday revoked the bail granted to a 26year-old driver, Friday Okwori, for failure to appear in court after several adjournments.

Revoking the bail, the judge, Mr Yakubu Ishaku, ordered the arrest of the defendant, adding that he should be remanded in prison.

“The defendant’s bail is hereby revoked; he should be arrested and kept in prison custody.

“As for the surety, court orders him to appear in court before 24 hours and failure to do so, he will forfeit his bail bond,’’ Ishaku said.

The prosecutor, Mr Frank Swem, had told the court that since the defendant was admitted to bail, he had failed to appear in court.

“I urge the court to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the defendant and his bail should be revoked,’’ Swem said.

The defendant was first arraigned on Oct. 10, 2017 for conspiracy and extortion, contrary to sections 97 and 292 of the Penal Code.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge had granted the defendant N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Oct. 24 for hearing.

Court records showed that the defendant had only appeared in court once since he was admitted to bail on Oct. 10. (NAN)
