Killing of lawmaker: Govt imposes curfew on Takum

One person was killed in Iddo-Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday following an alleged explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) in an apartment in the area.

It was gathered that two other people sustained serious injuries from the More security agents have been drafted to Takum to avert breakdown of law and order even as a dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed on the town.

The security measure, it was gathered, was put in place by the state government to forestall breakdown of law and order following the killing of a member representi­ng Takum I in the explosion which chopped off the suspect’s hand.

It was further gathered that the building where the IED was being manufactur­ed is a three-bedroom apartment occupied by some men alleged to be from Kogi State.

A resident of the community who only gave his name as Simon, said they heard an explosion in a building at the outskirts of the area, adding that when state House of Assembly, Mr Hosea Ibi by Kidnappers after they collected N25million ransom.

Kuteb Youths, it was further gathered, had threatened to protest the killing of the member and as a result the curfew was imposed by the state government.

The member who was abducted in his mother’s house on December 30, 2017 in Takum was found dead Monday in a forest at the they got there, they saw one person lying on the ground while a vehicle was rushing out of the place.

He said the community was not aware that IED was being manufactur­ed there until the explosion, and that youths in the area stormed the building and apprehende­d other occupants and chased the vehicle.

The Youths, it was gathered, are suspecting members of the notorious kidnapper and armed robber Ghana from Benue state of being behind the kidnapping and killing of the lawmaker.

Reacting, Governor Darius Ishaku condemned the killing of Hosea Ibi and promised that those behind the act would be tracked down and made to face the law. explosives and other arms and ammunition was abandoned by the driver who escaped into the bush.

The President, Iddo Youth, Mohammad Mohammad, said some of the suspects were arrested and handed over to the police.

The state Police Commission­er, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, said he would address the press on the matter today.

The governor had also visited the house of the late lawmaker and condoled with the wife and other family members.

Similarly, Speaker of the Taraba House of Assembly Mr Abel Peter Diah led members of the Assembly to the house of the late lawmaker and condoled with the family.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Jummai Alhassan, described the killing of Ibi inhuman.
