CRIME Gunmen attack Marine police base, kill 2 in Bayelsa

Gunmen suspected to be sea pirates yesterday attacked Ogbia Marine Police division in Bayelsa State, shot dead two officers on duty and made away with their riffles.

Our correspond­ent gathered that the gunmen also carted away two 200 horse power engines belonging to Ogbia local government.

The Chairman of Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Maritime Workers Union, Lyord Sese, who confirmed the incident said the gunmen stormed the area at about 10pm on Monday and operated till about 1:30 in the morning of Tuesday.

Also confirming the incident, the Commission­er of Police in Bayelsa, Asuquo Amba, said after exchange of gun firing, two police men were killed, while the assistant superinten­dent of police that led the team was seriously injured and he was recovering at an undisclose­d hospital in the state capital.

He said, “In the cause of gun battle, we lost two police men who were shot in action and the gunmen were able to make away with two of our riffles, 200 horse power engines belonging to Ogbia local government.

“The policemen on duty were able to recover a G3 magazine with 17 live ammunition­s and 18 expended ammunition from the hoodlums, so the firing was not from one direction,” he said.

The police boss explained that the suspected sea pirates actually came to steal the General Purpose magazine belonging to the Nigeria Police, but the men on duty had secured the equipment.
