Name nat’l monument after Ekwueme, Obiano tells FG
Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano, has asked the Federal Government to immortalise late former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme by naming a national monument after him.
Obiano spoke in Awka yesterday at a commendation service organised by the state government in honour of the octogenarian who died in a London hospital on November 19, 2017.
The governor emphasized that the former vice president was one of the greatest Nigerians who made giant contributions to the peace, unity and progress of the country.
“Ekwueme was the founder of G-34 that metamorphosed into Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and what he did during the 1998 Jos presidential primary that produced former President Olusegun Obasanjo stood him out as a patriotic Nigerian,” Obiano said, adding that the late elder statesman was instrumental to the creation of the six geo-political zones, and he encouraged investment at home through his Modotel chain of Hotels.
Obiano described Ekwueme as his political mentor and urged Nigerians to emulate his humility.
President-General, Ohaneze Ndigbo, John Nwodo, said Ekwueme was an embodiment of humility and a blessing to the people of the South-East zone.
Nwodo urged the people to emulate the late former vice president by using their God-given blessings to impact positively on society.
Also speaking, former Senate President’ Ken Nnamani described the late elder statesman as a man of honor and integrity whose political sagacity knew no bounds.
The Chairman of the burial committee and Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, described Ekwueme as one who stood against bribery and corruption in politics.
Earlier, the Anglican Bishop of Awka, Alex Ibezim, presiding over the commendation service, said, “Every day you live and wake up is an opportunity for you to impact positively on others.”
