6 killed in Birnin Gwari night attack

- From Andrew Agbese, Kaduna

Six people on Wednesday night lost their lives in an attack by suspected village militia at Kaguru village under Gayam ward of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The assailants were said to have stormed the village some few minutes to midnight shooting into the air and at people who came out of their houses trying to flee.

A resident who narrated what happened to our correspondent, said after chasing people away, they went round from house to house releasing cows and leading them into the bush.

“They set many houses ablaze after that. Nobody knows the exact number, but the cows are in their hundreds. They took all of them and left after killing six innocent souls,” the resident stated.

Our correspondent learnt yesterday that security personnel, including the police, army and vigilante groups were in the village from yesterday morning to ascertain the extent of damage.

The Kaduna State Government has condoled with the Kaguru community in the Birnin Gwari LGA following the killings.

A government statement disclosed that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had been mobilized to provide relief materials to affected people.

The statement further said heads of security agencies had held an emergency review meeting on the incident.
