Plateau Utd pound Sunshine as Akwa stay top

- By Orkula Shaagee

Akwa United maintained their position on the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) yesterday with a 4-0 massacre of Wikki Tourist at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Goals from Gabriel Wassa (14), Victor Mbaoma (66), Michael Okoro Ibe (81) and Dumte Christian Pyagbara (87) were all what the Promise Keepers needed to rout their visitors.

But it was the defending champions Plateau United, who registered the biggest win of the day yesterday as they pummeled Sunshine Stars 5 - 0 in Jos to stay second on the log.

Tosin Omoyele, Sunday Ingbede, Emeka Umeh, Tosin Omoyele and Pam Mafeng scored in the 2nd, 15th, 20th, 76th and 87th minutes respectively in the routing of the Akure visitors.

At the Yakubu Gowon stadium in Port-Harcourt, Ochowechi ‘Oche’ Salefu dispatched a late penalty to hand Rivers United maximum points against Go Round FC in the ‘Rivers derby’ yesterday.

The ‘Pride of Rivers’ United never really got off first gear for the entirety of the game against a Go Round side that appeared happy to play for a draw.

In Maiduguri, hosts El-Kanemi Warriors and Enyimba FC yesterday drew goalless in one of the Match Day 7 fixtures of the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The visiting Enyimba surprised the hosts with good resilience from the first blast of the referee’s whistle in the match played at the El-Kanemi Warriors Sports Centre in Maiduguri.

Both teams showed the urge to outplay one another though, with the home team piling much of the pressure on the visitors in the early minutes of the first half.

For their reward, they gained a penalty kick in the 42nd minute, which Bello Kofar-Mata lost.

In the other matches played yesterday, Abia Warriors were held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Enugu Rangers; Katsina United dismissed visiting Niger Tornadoes 2-0.

At the Aper Aku stadium in Makurdi, Esosa Igbinoba’s 22nd minute goal gave victory to Lobi Stars, who defeated Ifeanyi Ubah United 1-0, while Heartland FC defeated Kwara United 2-0, the same result recorded by host Kano Pillars against MFM in Kano.
