Insecurity: Reps demand IGP’s sack
Members of the House of Representatives yesterday demanded sack of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris over what they called “Woeful failure” to handle security issues in the country.
The lawmakers said President Muhammadu Buhari should replace the IGP “With a more professional policeman” to oversee the Nigeria Police.
This was even as the House demanded unreserved apology from the IGP to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, over the derogatory remarks on the governor by police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood.
The resolutions were reached after the adoption of two separate motions moved by Abubakar Nuhu Danburam (APC, Kano) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue).
But a member from Edo State, Johnson Agbonayinma, said the House should have given the IGP fair hearing, adding six lawmakers of the House will move another motion today to rescind that decision.
Danburam’s motion was on the need to curb thuggery in political activities in Kano State and other parts of the country. He said recent happenings in the state suggest that political thuggery has reached a crescendo where notable political figure including “a ranking member of the House” were prominently featured.
He said the situation has degenerated that the police recently advised Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso against visiting the state.
He prayed the house to invite the IGP and Kano State Commissioner of Police (CP) Rabiu Yusuf to appear before the House committee on police affairs to give account of what transpired.
