FG trains 500 farmers on soya beans production in Nasarawa

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in collaboration with Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), has commenced the training of 500 farmers on how to increase the production of soybeans in Nasarawa State.

State Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Lafia, Umaru Ahmed, disclosed this in Lafia at a one-day training workshop on soybeans for Extension Agents (EA) from across the three senatorial districts of the state.

Ahmed, represented by Sunday Samuel, an officer from the ministry, said the training would first be conducted for 20 Extension Agents in the state on methods to increase soya beans production who would, in turn, train 25 farmers each in their various communities.

He explained that the Federal Government was organising the workshop in order to revive the production of soya beans, a cash crop found in the north central part of the country, adding that the training would also go a long way in equipping farmers with the requisite knowledge in soya beans cultivation.

“Extension agents are the driving machine in this objective. We will train our extension agents to go and train farmers. We are targeting 500 farmers from Nasarawa State. That is why we are training 20 EAs who will in turn step down the training to 25 farmers each,” he also said.

On his part, the Programme Manager of Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), Stephen Kpama, commended the Federal Government for the training, adding that the step is important to tackle declining production of the crop in the state.
