- From Bashir Liman, Jos

Plateau United FC of Jos has kick-started the first leg of their CAF Champions League campaign with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Edin Sport of Cameroun at the Zaria Road Stadium in Jos yesterday.

A goal from defender Oghene Elijah in the first half and second half goals from wingers Sunday Ingbede and Joshua Obaje were enough for the Lalong Boys to pick the maximum points.

Plateau United took the lead through defender Oghene Elijah in the 19th minute when goalkeeper Ndjomo Ntiana saved Tosin Omoleye’s penalty after the later was brought down by a defender Pierre Francis.

The visitors’ goalkeeper Ndjomo Ntiana was at his best to deny Plateau United their second of the day when he saved a thunderous shot from striker Abdulwahab Afolabi in 23th minute.

At the 33th minute Ntiana also saved a point blank shot by Plateau United’s winger Raphael Ayagwa.

Thereafter, Edin Sport midfielder Paul Serge nearly level scores from corner kick in the 47th minute.

In the second half, Coach Kennedy Boboye brought in striker Kabiru Umar and winger Joshua Obaje to replace the lively Abdulwahab Afolabi and Ibeh Johnson respectively and in the 69th minute Boboye when Amos Dadung replaced Tosin Omoleye.

Plateau United doubled their lead in the 84th minute through Sunday Ingbede before Joshua Obaje got third goal at 90th minute after he rounded Edin’s goalkeeper Ntiana after being set up by Sunday Ingbede.

In another CAF Champions League match played yesterday, Akwa United felled 1-2 at home to Hawks of Gambia.

The Promise Keepers relentlessly raided the visitors’ area, restricting them in their own half but missed several scoring chances before the visitors stunned the home fans by scoring first.

The visitors, whose goalkeeper, Yankubu Calley, thwarted every move by the homers, recorded their first goal through Muhammed Jallow, in their first attempt at the homers goal area in the 11th minute.

Although the first goal was against the run of play, Lanin Charity, also beat United’s goalkeeper, Ojo Olorunleke, with a powerful shot in the 35th minute to score the Gambians’ second goal.

The second goal scorer (Charity) plays for the Gambian national team, the Scorpions.
