Bribery: CCT chairman to be arraigned March 16

- By Fidelis Mac Leva

The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar is to be arraigned in Court on March 16, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said.

Spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed to Daily Trust last night that Justice Danladi would be arraigned before Justice Ishaq Bello of the FCT High Court.

The arraignment is coming after the EFCC had earlier on January 25 filed a two count charge of bribery against Umar at the High Court of the FCT.

In the first count, the anti graft agency had accused the CCT chairman of asking for the sum of N10 million from one Rasheed Owolabi, sometime in 2012 in order to favour him in a pending case.

On the second charge, Umar was charged by the EFCC of receiving N1.8 million from the same Rasheed Owolabi.

It would be recalled that earlier in March 2015, the Commission had cleared the CCT chairman of bribery allegations.

Umar is presently handling the asset declaration case of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The Senate last week passed a resolution to confront the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and acting chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim magu for allegedly trying to influence the CCT in the ongoing trial of Saraki.

Justice Umar had earlier cleared Saraki of all charges, but the court of appeal upturned the ruling and asked the Senate President to stand trial from 3 of the charges against him.
