- From Richard P. Ngbokai, Kano

A 75-year-old woman and her 50-year-old son have been severely injured by suspected robbers at Babawa, a suburban area in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Hajiya Abu Haruna was stabbed while her son, Alhaji Yakubu Haruna, sustained gunshot injury on his leg when persons suspected to be armed robbers invaded his house at around 3:00am yesterday.

When our correspondent visited Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where the elderly woman was admitted, it was learnt that she was in the theatre.

Lawan Sarka, who spoke for the family, told our reporter that Yakubu, his elder brother, was shot on his leg and was undergoing treatment at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, Kano.

“Around 3:15am, today (Wednesday) there was sporadic shooting in our family compound but before we could rush out to see what was happening, the gunmen had fled. My mother was severely injured while my elder brother, Yusuf, was shot on his leg,” he said.

He added that because of the nature of the injuries the family could not report the incident to the police immediately until after the victims had been taken to hospital.

Confirming the incident, the state police command spokesman, DSP Magaji Musa Majia, said no life was lost in the incident, and that the victims were responding to treatment.

“The case was reported at Gezawa police station around 10am this morning (Wednesday) that the suspected armed robbers came on a Boxer motorcycle at 3:15am and entered the compound of one Alhaji Yakubu Hamisu Haruna aged 50 for suspected robbery but the man resisted and in the process they shot him on his right leg and his mother, Hajiya Abu Hamisu Haruna, was stabbed with a knife on her hand.

“No arrest has so far been made, and the Police Commissioner, CP Rabi’u Yusuf, has directed the DCP investigations to deploy personnel to the area for investigation and arrest of the perpetrators,” Majia said.
