Legal luminaries make case for mass participation in golf

The Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, Honourable Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem has called on legal practitioners in the country, including the womenfolk, to embrace the game golf for recreation in their bid to keep fit physically and mentally.

Speaking through Honourable Justice Modupe Fasanmi JCA, during the ceremonial tee off of the 2018 Bar and Bench golf open tournament organized by the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) over the weekend, the Appellate Court Justice noted with delight that golf is a game of integrity just like the legal profession deals with integrity.

Other Court of Appeal justices present at the Bar & Bench golf tournament including Honourable Justice Haruna Tsammami and Honourable Justice Noyerem Okonkwo, spoke in the same vein submitting that golf remains one of the noble sporting activities that one can engage in to keep body and soul fit.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud OON, SAN, in his address to participants at the tournament confirmed that the inaugural edition of the Bar and Bench Golf Tournament organized by the Ibadan Golf Club between November 4-6, 2016 “was a huge success.”

“I have no doubt that we shall record a greater success in this year’s competition,” he remarked in the address delivered on his behalf by the NBA General Secretary, Isiaq Abiola Olagunju Esq.

Mahmoud opined that the tournament would “play a key role in enhancing a very cordial relationship between the bench and the bar and also entrench the rules of mutual respect for one another.”

The NBA President spoke further: “Sports embrace all ages, all economic brackets and both sexes. It is a road to equity for disadvantaged groups in our society. Sport is a force for national unity and a builder of national pride.

“The Nigerian Bar Association commends the efforts of the leadership of the Ibadan Golf Club under the captaincy of Sikiru Idowu Salami Esq. for organizing this epoch event. I wish to assure all golfers that the NBA shall continue to partner with this Club in making this competition an international competition. I therefore welcome a proposal from our captain to make this a reality within the shortest possible time.”
