Fire destroys public electricity cables in Abeokuta
The Ogun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Otunba Dayo Adeneye, yesterday raised an alarm over destruction of public electricity cables through fire emanating from refuse dumps along the roads in some parts of Abeokuta, the state capital.
Adeneye disclosed this when the state government addressed a news conference on the security situation in the state at the Governor’s Office, Abeokuta.
The commissioner, who was responding to the question on the epileptic supply of electricity along major roads, said the situation had become worrisome despite what he called regular sensitization of the people against refuse burning in the state.
Public roads affected by the epileptic supply include Moshood Abiola Way, Olorunsogo road and Ijaiye road.
As the conference was going on, Adeneye suddenly told reporters, “We have just received information that the refuse burning at Onijanganjangan has damaged the electricity poles along the old Abeokuta road.”
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, added that vandalism and sub-standard equipment that contractors supplied for road light projects were also responsible for the epileptic supply.
He disclosed that the state government had ordered replacement for the damaged cables. “I understand that the cables have arrived and we shall replace them as soon as possible, for the safety of night crawlers,” he said.
