Tinubu should work to stop mass defection – Shehu Sani

- By Muideen Olaniyi

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, says it will be tragic if the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubuled committee fails to reconcile aggrieved members of the ruling APC.

Senator Sani, in an interview with journalists in Abuja over the weekend, said the appointment of Tinubu by President Muhammadu Buhari to reconcile feuding members had averted the “tragedy of people leaving the APC for other parties for now.”

He stated this while reacting to a question on whether he would contest the governorship of Kaduna State.

In the process where reconciliation is taking place now, it is in our interest to put our ambitions in our pockets. Mr. President said and we should wait for Asiwaju to address the problem,” Sani said.

He advised the Tinubu-led committee to give equal treatment to all feuding parties in various states, including Kaduna, where he hails from.

“Right now, the party is already divided in Kaduna and it is for the national secretariat to note this and we have said it in clear terms.

“The problem has defied solution for two years, but we believe that Asiwaju can do a lot of reconciliation. We hope that he will be able to achieve a lot, because if he fails, it is going to be doom for the party,” he said.

On President Buhari’s second term, Senator Sani urged the president to make his position known personally, saying he was constitutionally empowered to decide whether he wanted to contest.

The lawmaker said the reordering of the sequence of elections was to avoid “mass trials, mass convictions and mass burial of senators and members of the House of Representatives.

“By that, we will now allow each person to go to his grave or to be acquitted before ‘Justice Electorate’…Where you start from the president and end up with the states, we will have the ‘bandwagon effect’…If President Buhari wins, it means nobody will win any seat again. It will be President Buhari all through.

“Now, what we are saying is that they should put the presidential election last so that Nigerians have the opportunity to vote for senators and members of the House of Representatives; the ones they want, they elect them. Those ones they do not want, they reject them,” he said.
