ANigerian, Glory Esse and four others were the top five young African innovators in the energy sector that were recognised at the 10th Africa Energy Indaba that held in South Africa recently.
Esse was recognised for his energy efficient PowerStove while Matthew Wainwright, a South African won the 2018 African Youth Energy Innovator Award. Matthew’s innovation focussed on power generation for rural communities in Zambia. He developed a community managed, micro-grid utility that enables the deliverable of digital energy services to rural customers.
Other top innovators at the summit include Tichaona Matte from Zimbabwe with Green Kidney Algae Biofuel and Wastewater Treatment System, Amartei Kisseih for harnessing plastic waste in the build of portable multi-mount Vertical Axis Wind Turbines aiding coastal power generation; and John Magiro Wangari from Kenya for his desalination project using hydro energy.
According to a statement from Thembisa, the 10th Africa Energy Indaba has created a much-needed platform for youth talent in Africa to showcase their important work.
It said the top five innovators were chosen during some stringent selection process months.
“The African Energy Indaba has shown its support and the importance of giving visibility and awareness to the talented youth of Africa. This award provides an important platform for our youth Innovators on the African Continent,” said Deveena Subramony, Project Manager for the African Youth Energy Innovator Initiative.
The top 5 innovators, who hail from across the continent, pitched their products to a panel of judges and after a tough Q&A session, the winner of the evening emerged. the past three @LatifatOpoola The newly inaugurated President of Aten Youth Movement (AYM) of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Song Muru has vowed to promote entrepreneurship, and selfemployment among youths.
Song, who holds a master’s degree in Economics from University of Abuja emerged the president after elections held in the community recently.
Song in his acceptance speech said his team would work towards uniting the people, protect their heritage against external aggression and ensure they promote the cultural heritage of the Aten Nation so as not to go into extinction.
He also called on youths to be industrious and be useful to themselves and the society.
Song who observed that Ganawuri District is blessed with rivers and has great agricultural potentials and advantages called on youths to embrace agriculture especially dry season farming.
He also urged them to stay away from drugs and indolence for socioeconomic development of the area.
“We want to improve agriculture in our area especially dry season farming through deliberate efforts motivated, support through empowerment of the Youth to venture into the scheme.”
“We wish to make a community based scheme where we build a resource centre and use it to train 10,000 youth yearly starting from this year” he said.
“Our target is young women; we will empower and train them to be self-reliant to discourage them from early marriages. My campaign was all about self-employment and I hope to achieve that,” he said.
