The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has commended the performance of Plateau United, MFM and Akwa United in their continental fixtures and asked them to sustain the momentum as they move to the next stage in their respective competitions.

Plateau United and MFM who are representing Nigeria in the Champions League secured passages to the next stage after impressive showing against Eding Sport and Real Bamako respectively.

Akwa United also overturned their 1-2 loss at home to beat Banjul Hawks 2-0 to progress on 3-2 aggregate in the Confederation Cup.

Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, the General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Sanusi Mohammed said the clubs were benefitting from the meeting the federation held with them before the commencement of the CAF competitions.

He said after reviewing the dismal outings of Nigerian clubs in the continent in recent years, the NFF decided to support the clubs with tips on preparations and participation in international competitions.

He said “We are pleased with the performance of the clubs. Nigerians are proud of them.

“I am not surprised by their performance because we had called them for a meeting where we discussed the way forward in terms of preparation and participation in international competitions.

“We also advised them on the welfare of their players and encouraged them to feel free to seek technical and administrative assistance from us.”

Mohammed also attributed the clubs impressive run so far to the early kick-off of the 2018 NPFL season.

He stated that the clubs are benefitting from the early kickoff of the league which gave them the opportunity to test the strength of their teams before the start of the continental competitions.

“Credit must also go to the LMC for ensuring that the clubs get into competitive football before going into the competitions.

“The clubs tested their players and were able to make the necessary adjustments in their teams,” he noted.
