West Africa Golf Tour will develop game in Nigeria – Okatta
Emeka Okatta, the President West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT), says he is determined to change the face of golf in Nigeria to attract everyone, irrespective of the socio-economic background.
Okatta told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that in no time, golf would be viewed as a tool that could develop the youths, especially at the elementary and secondary schools.
He said that many held on to the notion that the game was exclusive to the rich, but he was doing all he could to change that perception by organisng a West Africa Golf Tour tagged “Eko Challenge Cup”.
“We are organising a golf tour tagged “Eko Challenge Cup’’ to hold at the Lakowe Lakes Golf Club in Lagos from March 7 to March 9.
“We expect no fewer than ten countries from Africa, including Nigeria, to participate in the tour.
“The total prize money for the competition is U.S $25,000 while the first prize would be $4,000.
“We expect the best professional players to grace the occasion and it will serve as an opportunity to compete with the best in Africa,” Okatta said.
He said that the WAGT would change the face of golf in Nigeria, as it would go a long way in bringing quality players together.
Okatta said that so much had been done at the amateur level, which is dominated by wealthy individuals who only participate socially and not as professionals.
