- From Eyo Charles, Calabar

Teachers of West African People’s Institute (WAPI), Calabar have said the donation of a hybrid library to the school by oil firms would improve the quality of education.

The principal, Mrs Mercy Etim, said at the commissioning ceremony that the books available in the library would help students who may not be able to purchase the recommended books.

The donors, which were subsidiaries of Chevron Nig Ltd and the NNPC, established the library to mark the 80th anniversary of one of the oldest secondary schools in Nigeria, WAPI, within its compound.

Speaking on behalf of the donors, Mr Richard Kennedy, a director of Star Deep Water Petroleum Ltd, represented by Mike Kabi, manager in charge of government and public affairs at Chevron, said the library was part of their social intervention programmes. “This library is fully equipped with 50 computers, assorted books, generating power plant, borehole and other necessary conveniences.
