Drama as mother-in-law, son kneel to beg divorce-seeking wife
It was a drama-filled session yesterday as a mother-in-law, Mrs. Oseni, and her son, Kehinde Oseni, practically went down on their knees to beg her daughter-in-law and Kehinde’s wife, Opeyemi, to rescind her divorce move.
Opeyemi, mother of two, had approached an Abeokuta Customary Grade II Court sitting at Ake to seek dissolution of her five-year-old marriage.
However, drama ensued when Kehinde’s mother rejected the dissolution. She begged and went down on her knees and was joined by her son on the ground, with a vow to turn over a new leaf.
In the suit, Opeyemi wanted the court to quash the marriage on the grounds of beating, lack of care and adulterous life of Kehinde.
She said, “The beating is too much and yet, I still use my money to care for him. One night, he beat and threw me outside. I had to sleep in a mosque and was fortunate to escape spiritualists’ attack that night.”
Kehinde denied the allegations, claiming that Opeyemi was the culprit. But, Kehinde’s mother admitted that the two of them were both troublesome, as she sought for the intervention of the court not to dissolve the marriage.
The Court’s President, Chief Olalekan Akande, asked Opeyemi if she would still be interested in going ahead with the divorce and she said yes.
At this stage, Kehinde’s mother started begging and consequently knelt to show her seriousness about it.
“My lord, help me to beg her. She is a responsible woman any mother-in-law would want to have as a wife. My son will change,” she said while going on her knees and joined by her son.
Akande chastised Kehinde for his actions, stressing that, “I always say that those who turn their wives to punching bags are irresponsible. Assuming as you were beating her, she died in the process, what do you think would have happened? You would have rot in jail,” he said
The Court President enjoined the parents to go and make reconciliation and come back for judgment on April 17.
At this juncture, Opeyemi demanded for her cash of N11,000 and Android phone that were missing during the last clash. This, Akande assured would be redeemed and also an undertaking letter of good behaviour.
