-

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 21-year-old labourer, Kabiru Jacob, to five months imprisonment for stealing a laptop.

The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, said the sentence would serve as deterrent to others.

Jacob, of no fixed address, was convicted on a count charge of theft.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the offence, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, and promised to be of good behaviour.

The prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, had told the court that a technician, Dauda Olu of Jabi Daki-biyu village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on March 19.

Dalhatu said on March 15, the complainant left his shop where he repaired phones and computers to buy some computer accessories at Wuse Market, Abuja.

He said that on his return, the complainant could not find one laptop valued at N120,000, belonging to a customer.

The prosecutor said the complainant looked for the convict who was caught four days later. He said during police investigation, the convict confessed to committing the crime and led the police officer to Kaduna State, where the stolen item was recovered.

According to the prosecutor, it was discovered that the convict had been into stealing from people close to him.

He said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
