Nigerian media ready to host the world - Osagie

Spokesman of the Internatio­nal Press Institute (IPI) World Congress 2018 (IPIWoCo 2018) and Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, Mr Eric Osagie, has declared Nigerian media’s readiness to host the world.

IPI World Congress 2018 holds in Abuja from June 21-23, 2018 under the theme, “Why Good Journalism Matters.”

Speaking on congress, Osagie arrangemen­ts had the said been The House of Representa­tives has urged the Executive Arm to make adequate budgetary provision to the National Agency for the Great Green Wall to enable it achieve its objectives.

The House also urged the federal ministries of environmen­t and water resources to fast track the National Arbovirus and Vectors Research Centre (NAVRC) is working to ensure active surveillan­ce of infectious disease vectors in the country.

In a statement yesterday, Coordinato­r of the centre, Dr Emeka Asadu said the centre has held an inaugural training workshop for state disease vector surveillan­ce officers in Enugu.

He said the workshop perfected to host journalist­s from across the world and showcase the country’s robust journalism.

He said, “The IPIWoCo 2018 will affirm the indispensa­ble role of quality media in building strong societies, showcasing investigat­ive stories and projects that bring positive change to individual­s and communitie­s in Africa and around the world.

“The congress comes at a time the African continent is experienci­ng rapidly growing economies, turbulent political transition­s and implementa­tion of policies, projects and programmes in line with the Great Green Wall initiative.

Adopting a motion by Beni Lar (PDP, Plateau), the House mandated the Committee on Environmen­t and Habitat to look into the nonimpleme­ntation of the Great Green Wall initiative in Nigeria and report back within eight weeks. was to provide skilled state level manpower for active surveillan­ce of vectors of diseases of public health importance in the country.

He said the immediate aim of the centre was to bring about a sustained nationwide active surveillan­ce of infectious disease vectors starting with three states; Benue, Nasarawa and Niger, and reaching six additional states by the end of 2018, and 24 states by December 2019. an increasing­ly techsavvy population, with the media also experienci­ng major changes and increasing­ly more dynamic environmen­t.”

The spokesman said the Chairman of Local Organising Committee of the IPI Congress 2018, Mr Nduka Obaiegbena, who is also chairman and publisher of Thisday newspapers, and members of the committee have been going round the country to sensitise government and corporate partners on the need to key into the global event.
