Jega heads Kano varsity's c'ttee for democratic centre establishm­ent

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has appointed Prof. Attahiru Jega chairman of a 15-man committee for the establishm­ent of Yusuf Maitama Sule Universiry Centre for the Advancemen­t of Politics and Democratic Governance.

A statement signed by the state Commission­er of Informatio­n, Malam Muhammad Garba, said establishm­ent of the centre was a tribute to the late Maitama The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) is scrutinizi­ng N501.4 million 2014 and 2015 Universal Basic Education Commission’s (UBEC) spending in 32 schools in Kaduna State.

Speaking at a town hall meeting to interact with relevant stakeholde­rs in Kaduna North Local Government Area of the state, the Administra­tive Officer of the coalition, Mrs Sule’s contributi­ons to political and democratic developmen­t in the North and Nigeria in general.

Garba said members of the committee include Justice Mamman Nasir (Galadiman Katsina), Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, Prof Mustapha Isa Ahmad (Vice Chancellor, the Yusuf Maitama Sule University), Prof Shehu Musa Alhaji (Vice Chancellor, Kano State University of Science and Technology), Prof Sule Bello and Prof. Dahiru Yahaya.

Others are Engr. Ahanonu Odinakachi, said that the coalition, with support from MacArthur Foundation, was tracking UBEC interventi­on projects in three local government areas of the state: Kaduna North, Lere and Jaba.

She said UBEC’s work plan stated that N165.4 million was allocated for various projects in 11 schools in Jaba, N186.6 million for 10 schools in Kaduna North and N149.3 million for 11 schools in Lere LGA, and that the essence of tracking the projects was Mansur Ahmed, Tajuddeen Aminu Dantata, Ibrahim Haruna, Alhaji Muhtari Hassan, Alhaji Muhtari Maitama and representa­tive of Kano Emirate Council while the Office of the Secretary to the State Government is to provide the secretary for the committee.

Daily Trust recalls that following the death of the late Danmasanin Kano in July last year, Governor Ganduje renamed the state-owned university as Yusuf Maitama Sule University. Arc. to ensure efficient use of the funds as well as to increase community voice in demanding for accountabi­lity.

“Community members have a stake in UBEC spending in their areas, so our mission is to engage them on effective monitoring and tracking of the funds to ensure that every child has access to quality basic education,” she said, explaining that the town hall meeting was organized to create a synergy for community accountabi­lity and transparen­cy.
