Sitting on Shema, EFCC case resumes tomorrow

- From Habibu Umar Aminu, Katsina

A Katsina High Court will tomorrow resume sitting in a case between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and former Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema alongside three others, namely Sani Hamisu Makana, Lawal Ahmad Safana and Ibrahim Lawal Dankaba.

The EFCC had since February 21st, 2017 dragged Shema and the three others before the court on a 22-count charge of criminal breach of trust and forgery amounting to N11 billion.

The court had suspended hearing after an application filed by Shema’s counsel challenging the jurisdiction of the court after the Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna which moved up to the Supreme Court that ruled otherwise.

During the court’s last sitting on February 13, 2018 it fixed April 10,11 and 12 for hearing on the substantive motion filed by the EFCC against the accused persons.

At the February 13 sitting, both Shema’s counsel Joseph Daudu SAN and EFCC’s, Sam Ologunorisa, SAN drew the attention of the court to the ruling of the Supreme Court and sought its implementation.

Daudu then drew the attention of the court to the materials sought and not being properly addressed as both signatories and seal therein differed and sought another adjournment to enable correction.

The EFCC’s counsel Ologunorisa said the court should refer to and continue on the substantive motion filed since last year and grant the relief sought therein as both parties had been duly served.

Justice Ibrahim Maikaita Bako, after both counsels had agreed on the need for an adjournment to finalize all procedures, fixed the 10, 11 and 12 of April for hearing on the substantive motion filled by the EFCC.
