Police arraign IMN members in Abuja courts

The FCT Police Command has arraigned members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), a Shiite group, arrested after a clash on Monday in four different courts in Abuja.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Legal department of the Command, CSP James Idachaba confirmed that 28 members of the group were docked before the Magistrate court in Mpape, while another 28 were taken to the Magistrate court in Lugbe.

He said another 28 were arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 and the remainder of the 115 that were arrested on Monday were taken before a Magistrate court in Wuse Zone 2.

Idachaba said another set of 23 members that were subsequent­ly arrested after the initially announced 115 were also docked before another Magistrate court in Wuse Zone 2.

He said while some of the IMN members were remanded in prisons by the courts, the juveniles among them were ordered to be taken to a facility provided for their remand in Kaduna State.

Daily Trust reports that following a clash with members of the group, police confirmed the arrest of 115 members, whom they accused of causing unrest and inflicting injuries on 22 police officers.

Members of the group had converged at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja where they sit-out to demand the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky when the clash started after police attempted to disperse the group.
