Man stabs wife to death in Rivers

- From Victor Edozie, Port Harcourt

Police in Rivers State have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing his wife to death. The suspect, whose name was simply given as Ibasaki is a resident of Buguma in Asari-torlu Local Government Area of the state.

Community sources said the suspect stabbed his wife on the laps over misunderstanding on domestic issues.

Our reporter learnt that the victim, who was a mother of two, had a quarrel with her husband over her alleged refusal to prepare meal for the family.

The sources said the victim had refused to prepare meal as ordered by her husband on Saturday and went out to celebrate her birthday with friends, and returned late in the night.

It was further disclosed that the couple had several marital crises in the past, which led to their separation but later reconciled following the intervention of their families.

A source revealed that the couple engaged in a fight when the husband broke a bottle and stabbed the woman on the lap. “The injury resulted to serious bleeding, and all efforts to save her within the area failed, as doctors were not found in the hospitals they rushed her to”

“She was later taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) in Choba, about an hour drive from Buguma where she was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty,” the source said.

Tonye David, a resident of the area said the suspect on hearing that the victim might not survive the injury handed himself over to the Buguma Police Station.

Rivers State Police Command spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident to journalists. He said that the suspect has been arrested.
