- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Three armed robbery suspects who allegedly attacked a commercial motorcycle rider with a hammer before bolting away with his bike have been arrested.

Police said the suspects flagged down the victim along Shasha road, Idimu, pretending to be passengers, adding that the rider who did not know that the three persons were armed robbers stopped to pick them.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who confirmed the arrest of the three, said while on their way to Shasha bus stop, one of the suspects attacked the rider with a hammer.

“One Aliu Bashiru, a commercial motorcycle rider of No. 18 Jayeoba Shasha Road, carried two passengers, namely, Chikwo Okechukwu and Mathew Adigo unknown to him that they were robbers.

“When they got to Oremeji Bus Stop in Shasha, the robbers brought out a hammer and struck the rider on the head. The rider collapsed and they dispossessed him of his Boxer motorcycle.

“At this point, some people were attracted to what was happening between the robbers and the rider who had already passed out. So they descended on the thieves and beat them up mercilessly.

“They were however saved from being lynched by a police team stationed close to the scene. Exhibits recovered from them include: one hammer and the Boxer motorcycle belonging to the rider,” he said.

Edgal said investigation is ongoing, and that the suspects will soon be charged to court soon.
