Police arrest 2 suspects over attack on Katsina speaker’s convoy

Two suspects allegedly behind the attack on the convoy of the Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly at Gidan Mutum Daya have been arrested.

The suspects, Shamsu Rabiu, 25 and Anas Abdullahi, 22, both of Gidan Mutum Daya, and a third suspect identified as Abdulgafar Aminu who is still at large, were arraigned before a Katsina Magistrate’s Court.

The incident was said to have occurred on May 4, when the speaker was returning from an official assignment in the area.

The accused persons are facing charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal force, assault, mischief, inciting disturbanc­e and disturbanc­e of public peace offences contrary to sections 97,327,113, 124 and 247 of penal code. Senior

According police prosecutin­g officer, Inspector Sani Ado, the accused persons had led some gang of thugs where they blocked the Gidan Mutum Daya junction burning brooms and subsequent­ly attacked the convoy damaging a car at the tail end of the convoy.

He further told the court that, an occupant of the car, Jibril Alqasim, who was manhandled in the process by one of the accused lodged to the a complaint at Kusada police station which led to the arrest and manhunt for the other now at large.

He pleaded for more time to enable police conclude investigat­ion on the matter which he said was still ongoing.

In her ruling, the Presiding Magistrate, Fadilla Dikko, adjourned the matter to June 20 for further mention and admitted the two accused on bail of N100, 000 and two sureties each.
