El-Kanemi defeat Akwa United to stay clear of relegation

E@jide_ l-Kanemi Warriors yesterday defeated Akwa United by 2-0 in a reschedule­d Nigeria Profession­al Football League MatchDay 15 fixture to stay clear of the relegation zone.

In a drenched ElKanemi stadium in Maiduguri, the home side attacked the away side ferociousl­y and were rewarded with a penalty after Jamiu Alimi handled the ball in the box with Michael Ohanu expertly putting away the spot kick.

With on the United the front were Warriors foot, Akwa forced to defend in numbers avoid going down more goals.

Akwa’s first real chance of the game come from the beautiful combinatio­n between Mbaoma and Ezekiel Bassey but failed to beat Warriors’ keeper George Michael.

However, the hosts took control of the game again as the trio of Michael Ohanu, Anthony Yefuk and Sani Abbani continued to torment the Akwa United defenders.

At the restart of the second half, the Promise Keepers as Akwa are also known, attempted to attack their hosts but all efforts to score a goal were futile with to to the enterprisi­ng Abbani extending the lead with a header from a corner.

Akwa who were the better side in the second half shot themselves in the foot following the red card issued to Jamiu Alimi.

With this latest result, El-Kanemi are 14th on the log with 26 points while Akwa United are 7th with 29 points.
