Enyimba return to winning ways, pip Tornadoes

- By Olusola ’Jide

Following their 3-0 loss to Congolese side, CARA Brazzaville in their second Group C clash of the CAF Confederation Cup last week, Enyimba yesterday evening defeated Niger Tornadoes by a lone goal to reignite their faltering season.

In a rescheduled MatchDay 15 played at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, the away side, who have picked more points away from home, made the first attempt on goal early in the first half.

The People’s Elephant still smarting from their loss came out as wounded lions to attack the Tornadoes which resulted in Alalade being hacked down by Iko James with Anaemena wasting the resultant free kick awarded by centre Adunola Quadri.

Uche John of Enyimba was the first player to go into the referee’s book for dissent before Oladapo also got booked for the same offense.

There were few moments of skills and brilliance from the home team in the first half but none yielded the much-needed goal. The game witnessed long on play-acting referee and was short on actual goal scoring chances for both sides.

At the restart of the second half, the game took a different dimension as the home team threw everything in their arsenal to return to winning ways.

The greater part of the second half witnessed the home team literarily camped in their opponents’ box, but the forward line kept fluffing their lines to the consternation of the technical bench.

The home team secured all three points at death of the game through Emeka Obioma who rose highest in the box to head home Sani’s cross into the bottom corner.

With this result, Enyimba climbed up to 9th position on 31 points while Tornadoes remain 4th with 34 points.
