Democratic governance polarized along ethnic, religious lines – IBB
…..renews call for 2 party structures
Former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babaginda has said that democratic governance has further polarized the country instead of uniting it, even as he berated politicians for failing to adhere to the rule of the game.
In a statement yesterday marking this year’s Democracy Day in Minna, the former leader said it was disheartening that political parties which evolved since May 1999 were devoid of clear cut ideologies with internal squabbles and cross carpeting, which is not healthy democracy.
The former leader said it was “high time we looked once more on the need to build a unique two party structures in the country at this critical period of electioneering year.”
While saluting the resilience of Nigerians in adopting democratic structures across the three-tiers of government for an interrupted period of 18 years, IBB hoped the general elections next year will further consolidate democratic governance, freedom and security in the country.
He said although Nigeria has had its share of conflicts and for the country’s political instability, just like many other nations and states, it has always survived against all odds.
“In our efforts to promote and protect democratic institutions, we should not forget the roles and sacrifices of our gallant armed forces in the chequered history of nationbuilding. Therefore, it would be in our own interest to look for solutions to the problems confronting us as a nation. In whatever circumstance we find ourselves, we must continue to exercise democratic tenants which promote freedom and respect of one another,” he said.
