NECO examination delayed for hours over logistics

- From Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, Minna

The National Examination Council (NECO) said the English Language examination for Senior School Certificate was delayed yesterday due to hitches in the North West and North East axis of the country.

The Council’s head of information unit, Malam Abdulazeez Sani attributed the delay in the commencement of examination on logistic, saying vehicles conveying materials to Kano, Jigawa in the Northwest and Gombe and Bauchi broke down midway into their journey there by necessitating the shifting of the examination which was slated for 10 am to 2 pm.

Daily Trust gathered yesterday that the examination was still on in some part of the country late into the evening.

“Normally Council’s examinations commence as from 10 am but there were hitches occasioned by broken down of delivery vehicles there by leading to the shift of examination from its traditional time to 2; pm across the country so that candidates can commence at the same time,” Sani said.

He said reports from all the centres indicated that the examination terminated within the stipulated time of 5:30pm, adding that there was no reported extension of examination time in any centre during the exercise.

He said in order to check leakages of questions papers, materials for particular examination were always moved from designated locations to affected states.

“We have been able to avert leakages through this method; however, it was unfortunate that we experienced this anomaly” he noted.

He promised that the Council would continue to ensure standard and transparency in the conduct of its examination as had been its practice.
