Confusion as Kogi senior doctor dies, three nurses slump

There was confusion yesterday at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja following the chain of events that trailed the death of a senior medical doctor with the hospital.

Dr Chukwudibe Rosemary, who was the Head of Department of Internal Medicine, died at the early hours of Monday after her colleagues had battled for hours to save her from heartrelat­ed complicati­ons.

Following her death, another medical doctor identified as Dr Idris Nuhu and three other nurses slumped almost simultaneo­usly thus causing confusion at the hospital.

The four medical personnel are now currently on admission at the hospital.

The Secretary, Associatio­n of Resident Doctors at Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Dr Moses Adaudi, who confirmed the incident, said the death of the doctor was as a result of lack of Intensive Care Unit at the hospital where she could have been treated.

“There was no oxygen spanner to place her on oxygen and even when she was to undergo some tests, there was no money to carry out the test,” he said.

Some of the health officials who spoke on the incident said the late doctor had difficulty getting her drugs as she was not among those that were paid March salaries last week.

According the other to doctor them, would have collapsed following the shocking news of his colleague, while the nurses may have suffered exhaustion from excess workload as they were said to have been on duty since Saturday due to inadequate manpower.

When contacted, the Kogi State chairman of the Nigerian Medical Associatio­n, Dr Godwin Tijani confirmed the death of the doctor and the collapse of a doctor and three other nurses at the hospital.

He said those that slumped were being and that there condition.

Dr Tijani said he would not make further comment on the incident until after investigat­ions into the matter.
