Breast feeding mothers: What to eat to keep you, your baby healthy

It is important for nursing mothers to eat healthy in order to keep themselves and their babies in good health, according to medical experts.

“You are what you eat’ says a nutritioni­st, Miss Chidera Ezenwafor. “So eventually, how the mother ends up looking is how her baby would look or react as breast milk is the strongest connection between a baby and its mother.”

Ezenwafor said nursing mothers should do less of calories and fat and more of vitamins induced meals. They should also eat less red meat and more white meat like chicken, turkey and fish, she said, adding that it has omega 3 which is very essential for the body, keeps the body energized and provides it with the necessary fat and minerals it needs.

Ezenwafor said there are also supplement­s that contain omega 3 that mothers can buy from pharmacies.

She debunked the popular belief that breastfeed­ing mothers must eat a lot and almost everything, saying that makes them end up eating the wrong things that put the health of their babies at risk.

The nutritioni­st also advised mothers to use healthy oil while cooking, like coconut and olive oil. “They should consume fruits or to their meals cucumbers which and aid digestion.”

She added that soda and alcohol should be reduced or stopped completely because of the sugar content, noting that natural juice and water are healthy for the mother and child.

Miss Ezenwafor pointed out that it is also very important to eat vegetables like carrots, beetroot, cabbage and spinach among others.

She advised mothers generally to introduce their children to healthy eating from an early stage by feeding them nuts, fruits and vegetables that they can snack on instead of junks and sweets.
