Council tasks laboratori­es on accreditat­ion

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has enjoined medical laboratory facilities in the country to get accreditat­ion.

Acting Registrar of the council, Tosan Erhabor made the call during the celebratio­n of the World Accreditat­ion Day in Abuja.

He said it would be in the interest of the patients and the economy if they do so, adding that it was one way of building confidence in the system and ensuring that they were safe.

Erhabor said perceived nonchalant attitude towards the culture of quality and accreditat­ion has been implicated in the failure of A pressure group, “Every Nigerian Do Something Positive Developmen­t Initiative” has urged Federal Government to redeploy the Police to curb terror attacks of Boko Haram and herdsmen in the country.

Specifical­ly, it called for the deployment of State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) personnel and those currently assigned as bodyguards to wealthy people, to secure the lives and property of the masses.

The group made the call during a peaceful protest it held at the entrance to the National products and services from the country competing favourably in the internatio­nal market.

“By continuous­ly shying away from the process of accreditat­ion, we are hurting ourselves and our economy as the process has been used as a tool to enhance trade in order that data and tests results emanating from laboratori­es and inspection bodies collective­ly known as Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) are able to enjoy global acceptance,” he said.

He said the council would not relent in its efforts to ensure that medical laboratory facilities in the country observe the highest safety standards in the interest of the practition­ers as well as the patients. Assembly yesterday in Abuja.

The Leader, Dr Perry Brimah, also called for the return of military to the barracks, saying they had no constituti­onal role replacing the police with wartime brutality because the police were currently engaged in bodyguard duties.

He urged for immediate decentrali­sation amendments to create state police and restore regionalis­m.

No official of the National Assembly was around to address the protesters as the lawmakers were currently on a three-week recess. (NAN)
