Police confirm attack on Fulani settlement in Jos south

- From Lami Sadiq, Jos

The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed an attack on a Fulani settlement adjacent to the Police Staff College in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of the state Saturday morning.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Tyopev Terna told Daily Trust on phone that the police received information on the attack around 8am on Saturday and quickly moved to the scene.

“A cow was killed and some of their huts were burnt down, but immediately after that, the Commissioner of Police called a meeting of the Fulani leaders and the Berom elders and resolved that such a situation should not be repeated and the meeting ended in a peaceful atmosphere,” he said.

However, the state chairman and secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in Nigeria, Muhammad Nuru Abdullahi and Abdullahi Ardo respectively wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie.

They said “Over 200 Berom youths had surrounded the Fulani settlement, dispersed their cattle towards the Federal High Way which caused panic among travellers as well as injured one Yusuf Musa Dajji and Anas Usman Adam.’’

The letter which was copied to Governor Simon Bako Lalong, all security chiefs in the state, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba and the Plateau State Peace Agency, confirmed the meeting but stressed that since the last meeting held with the president and vice president, two unprovoked attacks had been meted on the Fulani.

It said it was unfortunate that media houses that were quick to report against Fulani communities in the state had ignored two attacks on the Fulani in the last one week.

“To worsen the situation, even government media houses are suppressing atrocities committed by Berom on Fulani. We therefore call on security agencies especially the PPRO to report the two incidences that happened to Fulani communities last week,” the letter stated.
