Bayelsa assembly, security firm disagree over crime in waterways

- From Bassey Willie, Yenagoa

An Indigenous security firm in Bayelsa State, the Darlon Security and Guards (DSG) has dismissed last week’s resolution by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly accusing it of criminal acts, due to its operations at the creeks and swampy areas of the state.

Bayelsa Assembly had on July 11, 2018 passed a resolution accusing the company of involving in criminal acts in the creeks of the state.

The resolution followed a motion for urgent public importance sponsored by Col. Bernard Kenebai (Sagbama constituency 2), which mandated Governor Henry Seriake Dickson to intervene and stop the killing of innocent citizens in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

Reacting to the allegation, the Darlon Security and Guards outfit said its personnel do not bear arms, but work with conventional security agencies such as the Nigerian Army, Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police and the Department of State Service (DSS) to help safeguard the water ways in the state.

In a statement by the Public Relations and Security Coordinator of the outfit, Mr. Preye Oseke, urged the state House of Assembly not to condemn the activities of Darlon Security and Guards, but rather support the voluntary security company to combat the menace of oil thieves and criminalities in the water ways of the state.
