- From Habibu Umar Aminu, Katsina Students jailed 2 years for unlawful possession of firearms

The police in Katsina State have arrested a suspected car thief and recovered two stolen vehicles from him during investigation.

The suspect, Wadatau Lawan, 49, of Marina village, Sokoto State, was reportedly intercepted by a police patrol team with a stolen car.

The spokesman of Katsina police command, SP Gambo Isah, in a statement said on July 11, a police patrol team attached to Malumfashi Area Command effected the arrest while on routine patrol in Malumfashi town. During the course of investigation another motor vehicle was equally uncovered, he added.

He said the suspect would be arraigned in court immediately investigation is completed. A Plateau Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, yesterday sentenced two students of the Federal College of Education, Pankshin, Plateau, to two years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

The judge, Mr Yahaya Mohammed, sentenced 22-year-old Panret Jacob and 24-year-old Peter Wunying, to six months imprisonment each without an option of fine for conspiracy, and two years’ imprisonment each with an option of N20,000 fine for unlawful possession of firearms. Mohammed held that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others who would want to indulge in such acts.

The accused had both pleaded guilty to the two-count charge, on arraignment. The prosecutor, Anthony Enegbenore, said the students were arrested with a locally-made double barrel pistol, a fabricated pistol and fabricated cartridges, in contravention of Section 27 of the Firearms Act.
