Flood: Kaduna embarks on refuse evacuation

- From Christiana T. Alabi, Kaduna

Following the warning by the Nigerian Meteorological Services that Kaduna State may experience flood this year, the state government has embarked on emergency evacuation of refuse from areas prone to flood.

The evacuation exercise tagged ‘Operation flush’ was yesterday carried out at Kigo road, Bachama road in Malali, RafinGusa in Tudun Wada and within the state metropolis.

According to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ZL Global Alliance, AbiolaBashorun, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has called for an emergency meeting of key stakeholders to discuss how flood could be prevented in the state, hence the reason for the immediate action.

“We are here trying to evacuate refuse under a project called operation flush. We have however realized that people in Kigo area have continued to dump refuse in the canals. We de-silted River Kaduna in 2016 and that helped us to prevent flood in 2017. Before then, this area was known for flooding and we are doing this evacuation exercise to protect lives and property,”

“But as much as government is trying its best in this regard, people should learn to manage their waste from their homes. We started sensitizing the people in the market areas because NIMET has given us sign that Kaduna may experience flood this year and we don’t have to wait until it happens before we take action. The people of Kaduna state should work with us by desisting from blocking the drainages with refuse,” she said.
