...As Reps, operators differ on new electricity tariff
Members of the House of Representatives ad hoc Committee on Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) System and operators in the power sector yesterday expressed discordant views on the need and possibility of reducing the current electricity tariffs in the country.
The ad hoc Committee, in its public hearing on the “need to evaluate the MYTO System of electricity tariff in Nigeria,” decried the continuous increase in electricity tariff.
Chairman of the ad hoc Committee, Aminu Ashiru (APC, Katsina) said the hearing was designed to interface with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and other stakeholders to critically examine the current MYTO System of tariff against the backdrop of public outcry, and to come up with a realistic tariff regime acceptable to both operators and consumers.
Ashiru said: are motivated by public outcry over continuous increase the price of electricity.”
A cross-section of the operators said the current tariff is already too low in comparison with the cost of production, adding that further reduction would jeopardize the power sector unless the government injects more subsidy. The Chairman, NERC, Prof. James Momoh, said the MYTO system was introduced in 2008 and reviewed in 2012, to ensure that operators recover their returns on investment. “We the the in
