...As Reps, operators differ on new electricit­y tariff

Members of the House of Representa­tives ad hoc Committee on Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) System and operators in the power sector yesterday expressed discordant views on the need and possibilit­y of reducing the current electricit­y tariffs in the country.

The ad hoc Committee, in its public hearing on the “need to evaluate the MYTO System of electricit­y tariff in Nigeria,” decried the continuous increase in electricit­y tariff.

Chairman of the ad hoc Committee, Aminu Ashiru (APC, Katsina) said the hearing was designed to interface with the Nigerian Electricit­y Regulatory Commission (NERC) and other stakeholde­rs to critically examine the current MYTO System of tariff against the backdrop of public outcry, and to come up with a realistic tariff regime acceptable to both operators and consumers.

Ashiru said: are motivated by public outcry over continuous increase the price of electricit­y.”

A cross-section of the operators said the current tariff is already too low in comparison with the cost of production, adding that further reduction would jeopardize the power sector unless the government injects more subsidy.
