Institute mobilises undergraduates against quackery

- From Nurudeen Oyewole, Lagos

The Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) has rallied the support of students of higher institutions of learning against what it called the growing culture of unprofessionalism in the industry.

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of NISLT, Yemi Gbadegesin let the charge at the inauguration of the Federal Government’s enforcement team at NISLT headquarters and the subsequent visit of the team to The Polytechnic Ibadan campus.

He said it is unfortunate that quacks are not only taking over the industry with unprofessional conducts; non graduates of laboratory technology are the ones teaching the courses in some institutions of higher learning, while the curriculum is gradually being moved away from 75 per cent to 25 per cent practical.

“We have also discovered that many institutions are teaching theoretical aspect of the course rather than combining practical with theory. We want to ensure that people who are manning our Science laboratories are registered and licensed members of our institute. That is why we are saying enough of the unprofessionalism in our tertiary institutions so as to have quality graduates,” Gbadegesin said.

The NISLT Registrar said nothing compares to having quality graduates who understand the nitty gritty of their callings, hence the decision of the institute to have kick-started campus-tocampus campaigns against quackery and the sustenance of professionalism in the lecture rooms.
