‘Nigeria’s electricity management system faulty’
A presidential aspirant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has faulted what he referred to as “unitary” system of power generation and distribution.
He said the situation was partly responsible for the constant system collapse been experienced.
Fielding questions from journalists at the PDP secretariat at the weekend in Minna, Makarfi disclosed that part of his blueprint to tackle the energy challenge that has dogged the country for many decades, is to decentralize the generation and distribution of power to make the sector more functional.
“I think we are getting the issue of power wrong. We are operating a system where whatever you generate you put them in a common pool and in the process of pooling, you lose; then when you pool, you redistribute and in the process of redistributing you also lose.”
He said Nigeria also needs to tap into other areas where it has comparative advantage, especially where it has power sources in abundance.
“We have coal in abundance; we need to tap into this and power areas where such raw materials are located, as well as wind and other sources.
“We are a blessed country, what is required is the necessary political will to get our country out of the doldrums”, he noted.
