Anyaoku wants Nigeria restructured into 8 regions
Aformer Secretary-General of Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, says the world’s best leader cannot make Nigeria work given its present structure.
He said Nigeria should be restructured into eight regions, stressing that this would help solve the various challenges facing the country.
He spoke in Umuahia yesterday during the 7th Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Leadership Good Governance in Nigeria.
According to him, Nigeria is a country of diverse people who have lived in different geographical locations for centuries with longestablished cultures that are different from one another.
Anyaoku said: “Nigeria is still struggling to create a nation within herself and the best thing to do is to return to 1960 and 1963 constitution that created the regional governments. and
“Taking the present reality in the country to consideration, I don’t think we should return to four regions, not even six regions based on the six geo-political zones in my opinion. I recommend that this time around, we should return to eight regions.”
He said the six geo-political zones were very good bases for regional governments and could be modified to create the middle belt region because of similarities between Edo and Delta as well as the midwest region as new.
