Kebbi spends N2bn on students’ fees
Kebbi State Commissioner for Higher Education in Kebbi State, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, yesterday said the government spent over N2 billion from 2015 to 2018 on registration and school fees of students in various higher institutions in the country.
Addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on the achievements of Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu in the education sector, he said the amount was spent to ensure access to free higher education.
He said: “In 2015/2016, the sum of N415, 517,800 was paid to sixteen higher institutions, in 2016/2017, N876,717,482 was paid to twenty one institutions and in 2017/2018 current session the sum of N900,087,529 was presented for approval to thirty one institutions in the country.
“Teachers and education administrators have to be trained in order to perform effectively, the same as all facets of society, public or private derive their skilled workforce from the bye product of higher education”.
The commissioner added that 57 out of the 65 medical doctors, pharmacists and dentists sponsored by the state to study in India and Sudan had graduated as of July this year.
He said the governor had also directed his ministry to train additional 100 indigenes in China, India and Turkey in critical areas of needs such as Aeronautic Engineering, Railway Technology, Irrigation, Oil and Gas Storage, Transport, Mining, Electric and Automation.
