NAFDAC destroys N464m fake drugs in Gombe
The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control has confiscated and destroyed fake, expired and substandard drugs and food items worth over N464 million.
NAFDAC DirectorGeneral Professor Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this in Gombe yesterday.
Represented by the North-East zonal coordinator of the agency, Sabo Adamu, the NAFDAC boss said the products were confiscated by its officials from manufacturers, importers and distributors across the six states of the zone.
She said some of the expired drugs were handed over to the NAFDAC by compliant companies, trade unions, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and members of the National Association of Proprietary and Patent Medicine Dealers.
She listed the products as substandard, fake and falsely labeled antibiotics, anti-malaria and herbal drugs, spaghetti, vegetable oil, nonalcoholic beverages, cosmetics insecticides.
She reiterated that the agency had placed embargo on the issuance and renewal of permit for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredients for cough syrup preparation.
Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, represented by the Commissioner for Animal Husbandry and Nomadic Affairs, Mr Sammy Barka, said destruction of the drugs would help to eliminate the risk and consumption of counterfeit drugs in the society. and fake
