NAFDAC destroys N464m fake drugs in Gombe

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administra­tion and Control has confiscate­d and destroyed fake, expired and substandar­d drugs and food items worth over N464 million.

NAFDAC DirectorGe­neral Professor Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this in Gombe yesterday.

Represente­d by the North-East zonal coordinato­r of the agency, Sabo Adamu, the NAFDAC boss said the products were confiscate­d by its officials from manufactur­ers, importers and distributo­rs across the six states of the zone.

She said some of the expired drugs were handed over to the NAFDAC by compliant companies, trade unions, the Pharmaceut­ical Society of Nigeria and members of the National Associatio­n of Proprietar­y and Patent Medicine Dealers.

She listed the products as substandar­d, fake and falsely labeled antibiotic­s, anti-malaria and herbal drugs, spaghetti, vegetable oil, nonalcohol­ic beverages, cosmetics insecticid­es.

She reiterated that the agency had placed embargo on the issuance and renewal of permit for the importatio­n of codeine as active pharmaceut­ical ingredient­s for cough syrup preparatio­n.

Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, represente­d by the Commission­er for Animal Husbandry and Nomadic Affairs, Mr Sammy Barka, said destructio­n of the drugs would help to eliminate the risk and consumptio­n of counterfei­t drugs in the society. and fake
