Sokoto records 523 fire outbreaks, one death

Five hundred and twenty three fire outbreaks were recorded in Sokoto this year.

The Director-General of the state fire service, Murtala Mohammad, disclosed this yesterday at the one-day interactiv­e meeting of relevant stakeholde­rs in disaster management organized by the National Emergency Management Agency, Sokoto Operation Office.

According to Mohammed, a death of a minor was recorded in one of the incidents.

“We lost a three-year old who was sleeping during one of the outbreak while properties worth millions of Naira had been lost to the outbreaks,” he said.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the state Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Haliru, said the government had purchased and distribute­d relief materials worth millions of naira to some victims of floods, fire disasters and banditry in the state.

Haliru who confirmed the death of five people in Ghandi IDPs’ camp as result of either injury sustained during the Tabanni attack or ailment, said there was no outbreak of any disease at the camp.

“We have about 5000 IDPs and the state government has deployed five medical doctors and nurses to cater for their medical needs. They doctors are working round the clock to ensure the people in the camp are medically sound,” he said
