Prison Reformers win Savanah Conference basketball competitio­n

Prison Reformers of Niger state have emerged champions of this year’s Savanah Conference Basketball competitio­n which ended in Minna at the weekend.

Six teams which include Prison Reformers, Nasarawa Golden Touch, Taraba Hurricanes, Bukavu Blinks of Kano, Samaru Bulls of Kaduna and Adamawa Lions participat­ed in the competitio­n.

Prison Reformers beat Nasarawa Golden Touch to emerged champions during the three-day event which ended on Sunday.

Coaches Emmanuel Okama and Huzi Mshelia of Prison Reformers and Golden Touch in an interview shortly after the event said the experience garnered during the competitio­n was worthwhile, adding that the event availed them the opportunit­y to prepare early for the finals coming up in Lagos later in the month.

The Coordinato­r of the Savannah Conference, Hajiya Silifat Muhammad commended the coaches and players for exhibiting high sense of maturity and sportsmans­hip throughout the period of the competitio­n.

According to her, four teams from the Savanah Conference are expected to slug it out with four others from the Atlantic Conference in the Lagos event which is slated for 16th to 22nd of September.

The Coordinato­r assured that the overall winner apart from the trophy and cash prices would also be promoted along with other deserving teams.

She commended the National President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Engineer Musa Kida for exploring avenues of sustaining the competitio­n despite the financial and other logistic challenges the Federation is currently facing.

She said the aimed of the competitio­n is being achieved as more players are discovered from the grassroots.
